New Native Theatre presents

The Annual Two Spirit Powwow

About the Powwow

New Native Theatre is proud to present the 6th Annual Reclaiming Our Identities Two Spirit Powwow returning to the Twin Cities in 2027. The Two Spirit Powwow is Minnesota’s only powwow honoring our Native Two Spirit and LGBTQ+ relatives.

This free, family-friendly event brings together over 500 people for a full day of dancing, drumming, regalia, craft vendors, and a community feast. It’s more than a celebration — it’s a sacred space for visibility, culture, and love.

Powwow Etiquette

Follow The Emcees

Tip 1 of 9

Powwow protocols vary by host. Listen to the emcee and event staff for cues about standing, photography, open dances, seating, and any local rules.
Stand For Grand Entry

Tip 2 of 9

If you are able, stand and remove your hat during Grand Entry and other special songs the emcee identifies, such as flag, veterans, memorial, prayer, or honor songs.
Respect The Dance Arena

Tip 3 of 9

Treat the arena as a sacred space, not a shortcut. Do not cross or enter it unless the emcee invites everyone in for an intertribal, social, honoring, or blanket dance.
Regalia, Not Costumes

Tip 4 of 9

Call what dancers wear regalia, not costumes. Regalia can carry cultural, spiritual, family, and artistic meaning, and it should never be treated like dress-up.
Ask Before Taking Photos

Tip 5 of 9
Ask before photographing or filming individuals, especially for posed shots. Some songs, prayers, memorials, or specials are not for cameras, so always follow no-photo announcements.
Ask Before Touching

Tip 6 of 9
Do not touch regalia, drums, feathers, beadwork, hair, or personal items unless you are invited to do so. Many items are sacred, fragile, handmade, or family heirlooms.
Leave Fallen Feathers

Tip 7 of 9
If a feather falls, do not pick it up. Leave it where it is and notify arena staff, a veteran, or the arena director right away.
Honor Elders

Tip 8 of 9
Make room for Elders in seating, lines, and meal service when priority is being observed. If you are unsure, watch the flow of the space and yield generously.
Stay Sober, Stay Respectful

Tip 9 of 9
Powwows are sober, family and community-centered spaces. Do not bring alcohol or drugs, and keep language and behavior respectful.
